IAAPA.org/Funworld | JULY/AUGUST 2024 | Funworld 7 Launch WHEN THE SCHOOL YEAR ENDS , children don’t have to take a vacation from learning and socialization. Many museums help fill the summertime gap with camp programs that leverage their resources. The camps help museums develop strong relationships with their youngest visitors and their families, reinforce their missions, and generate additional revenue. Welcoming as many as 350 campers each week over the course of 11 weeks, the Orlando Science Center in Florida has an especially large summer camp program. Sessions are broken up by age and range from preschool to children entering grade six. Each weeklong session includes 20 to 25 campers per class and focuses on a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) topic, such as Digging for Dinos or Fairground Physics. The fee for the camp sessions is $350 for preschool through fourth grade and $450 for fifth and sixth graders. The center offers discounted rates for members, campers who attend multiple weeks, and families that enroll more than one child. “The center’s mission is ‘Inspire science learning for life.’ That’s really at the core of what our camp is about. Kids can gain skills and pursue interests in science,” says Emily Duguid, the organization’s vice president of education. “Most of all, we want the children to have fun. It is camp after all. Our goal is to make science engaging and fun.” To staff the camp, the Orlando Science Center deploys its 14 full-time, year-round educators and supplements them with 10 seasonal instructors, most of whom are teachers on summer break. The facility also hires 40 college students to serve as counselors and brings on 100 volunteers—typically high school students. Duguid says the volunteer positions are coveted, and the spots fill up quickly.
