The new Savoy Automobile Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, is a model example of just such a place, and it is becoming a popular gathering spot in the region. Opened in December 2021, the 65,000-square-foot museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sitting on a 37-acre campus. It’s already hosted holiday parties, business trainings, wed- dings, and anniversary celebrations. “Experiencing Savoy Museum is unlike any museum, automotive or art-based,” says Tom Shinall, the museum’s director of development. “Elevating the automobile to its own art medium is one of the museum’s top goals. Savoy has quickly become a go-to event space in our region. The masterfully designed architectural touches and the vision to create a state-of-the-art facility has driven individuals and groups to Savoy for their respective events.” Two key elements of this success are the museum’s rotating galleries and its incor- poration of large and dazzling direct view (DV) LED displays. Galleries A, B, and C, as well as the museum’s Great Hall, serve as temporary gallery spaces for exhibitions, each pertaining to a specific automotive theme. Shinall says one value of the rotating gal- leries is their ability to provide guests with a plethora of automotive themes, eras, and designs. Gallery D exclusively showcases select vehicles from the museum’s permanent collection. New Savoy Automobile Museum Fuses Classic Cars with Technology by Keith Miller MUSEUMS c SAVOY AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM The Savoy Automobile Museum offers changing exhibits, educational programs, and engaging experiences to showcase the beauty and history of cars.LAUNCH 12 Funworld | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 | IAAPA.org/Funworld High-Tech Alongside Curated Art The museum’s three huge DVLED dis- plays utilize direct-view technology from LG Business Solutions USA, presenting automobile-related content. The museum’s Presentation Theatre boasts a large 18-foot- by-31-foot curved display and a turntable stage. Its Great Hall features a 10-foot-by- 24-foot curved and tilted screen, and a third 4-foot-by-24-foot marquee display above the theater entrance promotes films and exhibits. In addition to its array of classic cars, the Savoy Automobile Museum showcases a curated collection of original automo- tive-themed works of art throughout the institution. How do the high-tech DVLED displays fit in with the classic automobiles and artwork? “The DVLED displays do not hinder the beauty of each vehicle, artwork, and automobilia displayed at Savoy,” Shinall answers. “As an attraction, we understand there’s a fine line between displays being a distraction or enhancement, and we are proud to see how our digital displays have enhanced our visitor’s experience.” Something for Everyone Another challenge for almost any museum is ensuring that its collection appeals to a wide range of visitor demographics. Classic autos from decades in the past may appeal to senior visitors, race cars to guests in their 20s and 30s, and machines loaded with the latest digital technology to those in their teens. Museums “The car-culture world is all encompassing and multigenerational,” Shinall says. “Children, kids, teens, adults, and seniors alike relate to automobiles, from pop culture to cherished memories. We see families throughout the museum on a daily basis sharing stories and pointing out the details that make each automobile special to that family.” The immense global success of the “Fast & Furious” street racing movie series and the 2019 motion picture “Ford v Ferrari” centered on the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race demonstrate the appeal of auto racing, and the Savoy Automobile Museum certainly understands this. “Our opening exhibitions included ‘American Racing,’ highlighted with cars from IndyCar, NASCAR, sprint, Salt Flats, and drag racing,” Shinall says. “Currently, ‘FrontRunners’ showcases victory-claiming, record-breaking, front-engine Indy 500 roadsters from the 1950s and 1960s, and the Pirelli 150th anniversary exhibition includes Formula 1 and Trans Am Series cars. Looking ahead, we are working on a ‘Brass Era Race Car’ exhibition.” Though the Savoy Automotive Museum is a membership- based institution, anyone can visit during operating hours. Further, the museum makes itself available for lease even to nonmembers, as Shinall explains: “Savoy is a cultural resource, and anyone has the opportunity to rent select rental spaces for events. Later this year, we are hosting a TEDx event, and we haven’t even touched car shows, cruise-ins, meetups, and more on the showgrounds. We are just getting started, and it is going to be a fun ride!” The museum also includes a café and retail store and comprises three structures—the museum, the vehicle storage building, and the outdoor pavilion, including showgrounds. Savoy Automobile Museum is open year-round, every Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $15, and $5 for youth ages 3 to 12. Complimentary admission is provided to kids under age 3, active military, and museum members. savoymuseum.org ABOVE: Savoy’s open-space galleries give visitors plenty of space to take photos of each car. Visitors listen to nostalgic conversations set in familiar local settings—a hair salon, coffee shop, and office—fit- ting for each venue, on the telephones. They can also watch commercials and television shows from yesteryear on bulky TV sets. “We invite visitors to reconnect with these technologies, while inspiring conversations and curiosity among the younger generations unfamiliar with them,” explains Priscilla Chua, the museum’s senior curator. Additionally, in the evenings after the museum closes, the “Off/On” exhibit transforms into an escape room, where par- ticipants decipher clues to “uncover a secret technological device that can help prevent a mass shutdown of the world’s technology.” nhb.gov.sg/nationalmuseum TRIOTECH Futuristic ‘Hive Break’ Debuts in China An epic sci-fibattle over ancient alien technology is taking place in OCT Group’s Fabland Valley Resort in Xiangyang, Hubei province, China. “Hive Break,” a 12-minute, 1,000-square-meter attraction, designed and developed by Triotech, features two parallel paths with intertwining narratives. “The first component of each walkthrough is a dynamic pod that replicates a space shuttle,” explains Harley Bostock, Triotech’s managing director for Asia-Pacific. “Guests are immersed in a thrilling ride that takes them through an alien wormhole to a distant galaxy where they face a pirate attack and a crash landing.” Next stop: a training facility where guests learn how to use their targeting device and then move on to a 3D motion simula- tor, the XD Dark Ride. The interactive media content is built on the Unreal game engine. “This double walkthrough attraction offers a high through- put and encourages repeat visits,” Bostock adds, “as guests experience a different narrative, depending on which side they choose in the queue line.” trio-tech.com NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE16 by Juliana Gilling LAUNCH Europe, Middle East, Africa Funworld | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 | IAAPA.org/Funworld Shipwreck Coast landed in the Chessington World of Adventures Resort in Surrey, England, this summer. Guests can pitch in to help save the storm-rid- den harbor town in this themed land. It includes two new fam- ily-friendly rides. On “Barrel Bail Out!” riders have to empty out the barrels they’re whizzing around in while trapped in a whirlpool. They also get into a spot of “Trawler Trouble” as they help a trawler captain free his ship from choppy seas. Chessington reopened “Seastorm,” a ride featur- ing miniature galleons, in June as part of the first wave of this redevelopment. The “Blue Barnacle” swinging pirate ship, added in 2021, continues its voyage. Besides the new rides and nautical theming, Shipwreck Coast includes a brand-new enclosure for black rats. “Our team has taken the much-loved Pirates’ Cove land and transformed it into this incredible harbor town, Shipwreck Coast,” says Kevin McIlmurray, head of guest operations at Chessington World of Adventures Resort. “We can’t wait to see our guests experience it and meet our new resident animals.” chessington.com The growth of experiential brand homes continues as World of Volvo prepares to open in Gothenburg, Sweden, in early 2024. The Swedish carmaker wants the five-story, 22,000-square- meter venue to become a meeting place for locals or visitors. World of Volvo will combine space for exhibitions, concerts, events, dining, and retail experiences, in addition to being the heart of all Volvo companies and a car enthusiast’s dream. Volvo Cars and Volvo Group are driving the venture. “The opening is still some way off, so there is plenty of time to create the content and program we will offer when we open our doors. Right now, construction is in full swing. We will create a vibrant place that changes shape frequently, where people can meet and be inspired,” says Magnus Wrahme, CEO of World of Volvo. Henning Larsen has designed a landmark building. Scandinavian architecture embraces natural materials, and a giant tree-like structure rises inside World of Volvo. Floor- to-ceiling windows encourage openness and participation. Sustainability is central to the project, which has achieved LEED Gold and WELL Gold certifications. Apart from the exhibitions, it won’t cost anything to visit World of Volvo; the building and the park around it will be open to everyone. “World of Volvo will be a unique arena that we believe will help to lift the whole of Gothenburg. We are very proud of this initiative and look forward to the inauguration,” Wrahme says. worldofvolvo.com I N G T O N W O R L D O F A D V E N T U R E S R E S O R T WORLD OF VOLVO Volvo’s Vroom to Grow Nautical Style at Chessington World of Adventures Chessington World of Adventures Resort will host three special events at IAAPA Expo Europe.
