I was 14 years old when a local park in my neighborhood built a water slide and began hiring. I eagerly accepted my first job as a “trash attendant” and began my career in the attractions industry. I eventually worked my way up to food and beverage director, which is when I became a member of IAAPA and attended my first conference and trade show in 1990. It was the beginning of a wonderful and productive relationship. Over the years, I attended IAAPA Expo educational sessions about a diverse array of products and business strategies, like refillable drink programs, increasing per caps, new ride safety standards, scheduled maintenance planning, and so much more. I explored the trade show floor and found new products, including advanced filtration technologies, animatronics, themed experiences, and even new ticketing systems. While at Expo, I attended many EDUTours and visited multiple parks, connecting with industry peers to learn different approaches to operational challenges and how to create better guest expe- riences to implement within my own organization. Although I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, I was benefiting from the very reason IAAPA has celebrated over 104 years as an organization. As I progressed in my career and took on different roles, my passion for this industry—bolstered by the connections I made through IAAPA—contributed to my success as an attractions professional. As the years passed, I learned that there was so much more to IAAPA than just the Expos. I attended leadership conferences and forums and took advantage of the professional development programs, including becoming an IAAPA Certified Attractions Executive (ICAE). So much of my career growth and accomplishments have all had one thing in com- mon: the connections I made through IAAPA. I have experienced firsthand the value of membership, and I look forward to continuing to grow my network. I want to honor the great work of my predecessors by continually adapting to our members’ needs, but most importantly, I will always make it my mission to foster, build, and maintain connections for our members and our industry like the ones that were so beneficial to me.
